GES Extends School Selection Deadline to June 25, Includes Private SHSs in Free SHS Program
Accra, Ghana – Final-year Junior High School (JHS) students across Ghana now have more time to finalize their Senior High School (SHS) selections, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) has extended the deadline to Wednesday, June 25, 2025. This extension is a direct result of a significant policy change allowing private Senior High Schools to be included in the selection system for the first time.
This development follows a major government decision to include private SHSs into the popular Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, starting from the upcoming 2026/2027 academic year. The strategic move aims to broaden access to secondary education for more students and reduce the long-standing issue of overcrowding in public schools.
The GES communicated the new deadline in a circular issued on Thursday, June 13, instructing all Regional Directors of Education to ensure the information reaches Metro, Municipal, and District Directors, and subsequently all JHS final-year students through their school heads.
"This extension has become necessary due to the inclusion of private Senior High Schools in the selection process, allowing candidates additional time to make well-informed choices," the statement elaborated.
Students are strongly advised by the GES to consult with their teachers, parents, and guardians before submitting their final selections. The Service confirmed that all existing guidelines and procedures for the selection process remain unchanged, with the only revision being an updated school list that now includes the newly selected private SHSs.
To further assist students, a supplementary register detailing the newly added private Senior High Schools has been provided.
The integration of private schools into the Free SHS policy represents a key moment for Ghana’s education sector. It is projected to drastically ease the infrastructure strain on public institutions while at the same time, presenting students with a wider line-up of educational choices.
