Bawumia Urges Mahama to Bring Perpetrators to Justice Amid Ablekuma North Chaos

Friday, July 11, 2025 – Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a direct appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure swift actionagainst those responsible for the violence that erupted during the parliamentary by-election rerun in Ablekuma North.p

The incident, which occurred at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor, saw a coordinated attack by unidentified “macho men” who stormed the centre in a pickup and motorcycles. The assailants disrupted voting, physically assaulted NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, and even struck a journalist on

Captured on video, the violent scenes prompted Bawumia to denounce the normalization of political violence. He stressed that “those who have perpetrated these acts have been caught on video” and insisted they must be “brought to book… no matter how long it takes”

“This is not the democracy that Ghana wants to see… this is the only way we can deter this in future,” Bawumia warned, underlining the gravity of the attack on democratic norms .

The Electoral Commission had scheduled reruns in 19 polling stations after unresolved disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections. However, the increasing tensions culminated in Friday’s violence, despite heightened security presence.

Bawumia has placed the onus squarely on President Mahama and the NDC-led government, appealing for decisive leadership. “We will not forget what has happened… bring the perpetrators to book,” he stated, appealing for a firm response to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity.

1. Does the image accurately represent the headline’s message?

Yes, the image likely reflects the headline’s message if it shows ECG officials, electricity meters, disconnections, payment warnings, or people engaging with ECG services. These visuals would directly support the idea of a nationwide campaign emphasizing bill payment.

2. What emotions does the image evoke?

It may evoke urgency and a sense of accountability. If the image includes stern officials or people reacting to power disconnections, it can also trigger sympathy or concern—especially for vulnerable households affected by non-payment.

3. Is the image manipulated or biased?

The image may carry subtle bias depending on what or who is shown. For instance:

  • If it depicts poor communities or individuals in distress, it might imply that defaulters are from low-income areas, which frames the issue through a socioeconomic lens.
  • If it shows ECG officers in uniform appearing firm or authoritative, it emphasizes the power of enforcement rather than the reasons behind non-payment.

4. How does composition affect storytelling?

  • Framing: A close-up of disconnected meters or locked shops directs focus on the consequence of non-payment.
  • Lighting: Bright lighting during daytime can imply transparency and urgency; dim or shadowy lighting might suggest tension or conflict.
  • Focus: A sharp focus on ECG staff and tools (e.g., cutters, meters) gives the campaign a technical and official tone.

5. Does the image add depth to the story or simply reinforce the headline?

It can add depth if it shows real-life effects—like people reacting, businesses closed, or discussions between ECG and residents. But if it's just a generic image of officials or a company logo, it merely reinforces the headline without enriching the narrative.

6. Would a different image change the reader’s perception of the news?

Yes.

  • An image of a struggling family could shift the tone toward sympathy and affordability issues.
  • A photo of luxurious homes with unpaid bills would shift it to a justice and fairness debate.
  • A chart or infographic might make the issue feel more administrative and less personal.

7. How does the image compare to others covering the same story?

If other outlets use data visualizations or press conference photos, an image showing direct fieldwork (e.g., ECG staff in action) is more visceral and action-driven, potentially standing out as more confrontational or urgent.

8. Is the image culturally or politically significant?

No it is not culturally or political significant. The image only shows a signpost of the  Electricity Company of Ghana which serves as a source of electricity for the country.
